Threads, the Twitter/X alternative by Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, is partially capable of connecting to other Fediverse instances via the ActivityPub protocol. However, Threads is not universally welcome everywhere in the Fediverse due to being operated by the same corporation as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, notorious for harvesting, bundling and selling all kinds of private data with no consent of its owners. Thus, many instances all over the Fediverse have blocked Threads.
At the same time, Threads itself has very strict rules for instances that do want to connect. This image macro suggests that keeping Threads out works by either intentionally breaking one or multiple of these rules or not jumping through hoops to comply with them.
In practice, this has only got a chance to work if the instance is big enough for Threads to care so that its blocklist is not cluttered with thousands upon thousands of potentially short-lived personal instances. From my experience, the threshold may be at 1,000 monthly active users.
